Began racing in February of 1977, at age 11. Got his first factory ride with Robinson Racing in 1981. Rode for Kuwahara during 1983 and ‘84, then hooked up with the legendary Huffy team in ‘85. Turned pro in 1984-and was competitive for 15 seasons as a top-ranked pro.  Most amazing is that in Gary’s 15 year Pro Career, only twice has he held a number lower than 4--which makes an unprecedented career average number of 3.0. Holds four ABA No. 1 Pro titles-from 1989, 1990, 1994 and 1995 (tying him with Pete Loncarevich with 4 Pro titles each). Another amazing Ellis fact; all this time Gary had only had three major injuries, partly explaining his longevity in BMX. Gary first signed-on with GT in the middle of ’85 and rode for them until his retirement in 1998. He was on the covers of more BMX magazines than any other rider--over 48. Winner of two NORA Cups, numerous BMX Plus "Rider of the Year" awards and two Golden Cranks. For years he was been the highest paid pro in BMX. Up until his very last race in November of 1998, he was still capable of winning at age 32, which was uncommon for it`s time.
